Chinese billionaire, Jack Ma sends coronavirus prevention materials to Africa

Chinese billionaire, Jack Ma who co-founded Alibaba Group a multinational technology conglomerate, has sent some coronavirus  prevention materials to Africa. This support includes 1.1million testing kits, 6million masks & 60,000 protective suits to be distributed throughout Africa.  Already Rwanda has received theirs.

Access bank shuts down branch in Lagos after a customer tested positive for coronavirus

The management of Access Bank has shut down one of its facilities in Lagos after a customer tested positive for coronavirus.  In a statement shared on its Instagram page, it was gathered that a bank customer who tested positive for coronavirus visited a branch of the bank in Ligali Ayorinde on Monday March 16. He was symptom-free at the time of the visit and currently being monitored at the isolation center in Yaba. 

Niger State declares lockdown over coronavirus

The Niger State Government has declared a total lockdown in the state as a precautionary measure against coronavirus.  Governor Abubakar Sani Bello who made the announcement in a state-wide broadcast on Monday March 23, declared restriction of movement from 8am to 8pm. He also directed the closure of all Almajiri schools in the state with immediate effect from today, Monday 23.

Bauchi state government confirms state governor, Bala Mohammed's self-isolation over Coronavirus

The Bauchi state government have released a statement confirming that the state governor, Bala Mohammed and his aides have gone into self-isolation after he came in contact with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's son who recently tested positive to Coronavirus. The statement revealed that the governor and Atiku's son met on an Aero Contractor flight. Read the statement below.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] in the 2019 General Elections, Atiku Abubakar, has announced that his son tested positive to coronavirus. He made his known via his Twitter handle on Sunday.   “My son has tested positive to coronavirus,” he tweeted.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has gone into quarantine after a doctor who administered a vaccine to her tested positive for Covid-19. Merkel’s spokesman said she was informed about the doctor’s test shortly after holding a news conference on Sunday announcing new measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Senate approves HND as minimum qualification for president and state governors

The Nigerian Senate has approved Higher National Diploma (HND) as the minimum qualification for citizens seeking to be president or governors.  The bill which proposed the certificate as the minimum qualification for president and state governors, and Ordinary National Diploma (OND) as the minimum qualification for those contesting for state and federal legislative seats, passed its second reading on Thursday March 12.  President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan sent the bill which is sponsored by Istifanus Gyang (PDP, Plateau) to the Committee on Constitution Review after lawmakers passed the proposed amendment for second reading. It is expected the bill will alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide for the amendment of Sections 65 (2) (a), 131 (d), Section 106 (c) and Section 177 (d) on minimum educational qualification for those seeking election as state or federal lawmakers, as well as governors, president and their deputies.

Nigerian Senate moves to strip President, Governors, their deputies of immunity

The Senate is set to remove the immunity in criminal matters enjoyed by Presidents, Vice Presidents, State governors and their deputies in Nigeria. The bill is seeking an alteration to the 1999 Constitution. The second reading of the Bill titled: “A Bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to qualify criminal liability for certain public officers under Section 308”,  took place during plenary today March 12th. The bill which is sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, provides that a President, Vice President, Governors and Deputy Governors shall lose their immunity if they are investigated by security and anti-graft agencies, including the courts.

#Coronavirus: Uganda restricts travel from 16 countries including UK, France, US, Germany, and Spain

The Ugandan government has taken a very drastic decision by restricting visitors from some countries with high cases of coronavirus, including China, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, South Korea, and Spain. 'Government has decided to ask travelers from the affected countries not to come to Uganda because the high cases they are reporting can easily be imported into the country," the country's health minister Jane Ruth Aceng said in a statement  A revised advisory released on Wednesday by the Health Ministry increased the number of high-risk countries from 7 to 16, including the United States and the UK as well as the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Austria, and Malaysia.

Breaking! Court orders Sanusi’s release from confinement

Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the immediate release of dethroned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from confinement/detention. Justice Anwuli Chikere made the order in an ex-parte ruling on Friday morning after listening to lawyer to Sanusi, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) who argued a motion ex-parte to that effect. The order, made interim, is directed at the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Attorney General of Kano State and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) – who are all named as respondents in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on March 12, 2020 by Sanusi.

Governor Makinde signs Amotekun bill into law

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde on Tuesday signed the bill establishing the State Security Network Agency, code-named Operation Amotekun into law. The signing took place today March 10, at the executive council chambers in the Governor’s office in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. Governor Makinde while signing the bill called on prospective investors not to entertain any fear as the state government will not renege on its promise to provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the state.

He equally said he was leaving the throne as a fulfilled and happy man. Sanusi ll, who dropped this message in Hausa to the people of Kano,after his dethronement by the Kano state government on Monday, said,” l am taking the dethronement in good faith.

French minister Franck Riester tests positive for coronavirus

Franck Riester, the minister   of Culture of the French Republic has tested positive for coronavirus. “He is not in hospital, but rather confined to his home, with very few symptoms,” France’s health minister Olivier Véran said in an interview with French news channel BFMTV on Monday evening. The minister is believed to have contracted the virus at the country’s lower house National Assembly, where five cases have been confirmed in recent days.  As of Monday evening, there were 1,412 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 30 related deaths in France.

US priest who shook hands with more than 500 worshipers has been infected with deadly Coronavirus

Several hundred people have been ordered to self-quarantine after the rector of a prominent church in Washington DC was confirmed as the city's first coronavirus patient. Reverend Timothy Cole of Christ Church Episcopal in Georgetown remains hospitalised after DC health officials announced on Monday he was infected with the flu-like illness. City officials are urging all worshippers who visited the church either on 24 February of between 28 February and 3 March self-quarantine themselves for two weeks from the last time they have visited the church.

UNIZIK suspends Chinese course, tells Chinese lecturers who traveled for holiday not to return

The Vice-Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, Prof Charles Esomone, has revealed that the institution has suspended the Chinese course in the school in the wake of Coronavirus in Nigeria. The academic supremo who made this known during a pre-convocation press conference on Monday, said that the measure was taken to curtail the probable spread of the disease.

Aminu Ado Bayero named new Emir of Kano

His Highness, Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Bichi and son of late Emir Abdullahi Ado Bayero has been appointed the new Emir of Kano by Kano state government. Announcing his appointment today, after Emir Sanusi was dethroned, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, said Aminu Ado Bayero’s appointment was as a result of recommendations by the four kingmakers of Kano Emirate Council.

The Kano State government has dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II. The dethronement of the Emir followed the State Council executive meeting presided over by the Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Secretary to the state government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Alhaji in Press Statement on Monday, said Ganduje approved the immediate removal/dethronement of the Emir of Kano.

First person dies of coronavirus in Africa

A German tourist died on Sunday of the novel coronavirus in a Sinai resort of eastern Egypt, the health ministry announced, the first death from the epidemic recorded in Africa. "The 60-year-old German citizen showed symptoms of a fever (and) checked into Hurghada hospital on 6 March," before testing positive for COVID-19, it said in a statement. The tourist, who arrived from Germany a week ago, died after having refused to be transferred to an isolation ward until 7 March once his breathing had been affected by "acute pneumonia".

Just in! ASUU begins strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on a two- week warning strike with effect from Monday. Its National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, announced this at end of the National Executive Council meeting(NEC) held at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). Ogunyemi said the strike action was to compel federal government to implement the agreements and resolutions of Memorandum of Action discussed in the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the 2017 Memorandum of Action (MoU), all of which have not been implemented.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has announced a second confirmed case of Coronavirus in Nigeria. It was gather that the victim had contact with the Italian that brought coronavirus to Nigeria. The victim was said to be one of those under isolation. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed this in a tweet this morning.
